Trend Forecast: The Styles That Will Dominate in 2026

Trend Forecast

When it comes to fashion trends, every new year is bound to be full of surprises, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t see some of them coming from a mile away. 2026 is shaping up to be the year of oxymoronic balance: we can expect nostalgic innovation, sophisticated streetwear, and formal wear that prioritises comfort above all else.

Style in 2026 will be louder and more individualised, where shoppers will embrace a more postmodern approach to how they interact with what’s new. So, without any further ado, I’m excited to guide you through some upcoming trends that have been bubbling under the surface for years.

Nostalgic Innovation

In the early winter months, we’re already witnessing what I call the ‘nanny knitwear renaissance’. Cosy woollen pieces, often adorned with floral motifs, are popping up everywhere right now and I can’t get enough of them. This trend is resonating and taking hold of the zeitgeist because it’s defying fast fashion norms with a refreshing sense of craftsmanship. Homemade details remind us that clothes can be personal and tell a story, while bringing the texture, the warmth, and the comfort we need in turbulent times.

These detailed, carefully embroidered cardigans and sweaters carry an air of elegant nostalgia, which I’ve already seen combined with wide-leg jeans and boots of all shapes and sizes: sleek, functional, you name it. For too long, knitwear has been seriously underrated, especially given how versatile it really is. We’re throwing the old and new into a blender, and the result is honestly stunning. We’ve only just scratched the surface of knitwear’s potential, so you can expect this one to come back in a big way in November time.

Sophisticated Streetwear

Streetwear isn’t going anywhere this year. In fact, it’s getting a bit of a makeover, and I’m here for it. Once upon a time, it was all about huge logos, getting the biggest silhouette possible, and being so casual that wearing it got you turned away from all the best restaurants in town. But now? Streetwear’s growing up. It’s become more polished, without losing its cool.

It’s embracing clean lines, high-end fabrics and materials, and carefully added details that are more subtle than the  ‘Supreme’ logo punching you in the face with its shameless branding. Now designers and consumers prefer a quieter confidence that makes its cool feel more effortless.

Sneakers are still a staple, obviously. But the difference this year is all in the details. Think skate shoes with a sleaker design and more premium materials, inspired by brands like Axel Arigato.

Relaxed Formalwear

Getting dressed up in 2026 is all about looking amazing while feeling comfy. Remember corsets? We’re going as far away from those as possible. No more stiff fabrics and tight skirts. Instead, we’re moving towards pieces that actually move with you and make you feel like yourself, whether you’re going to a fancy work event, a wedding, or just an upmarket date night.

The biggest difference I’m expecting (and have already started to see) is the fabric choices. Light, silky blends that flow with you, and stretchier, more forgiving materials – like spandex-infused polyester – are quickly becoming wardrobe staples for my fellow match enthusiasts.

These contrasting materials also go to show that personal style isn’t dead yet, as the market is pushing two totally opposing looks at the same time. One is free-flowing and drapes beautifully, while the other is relentlessly form-fitting.

Despite their obvious differences, both of these styles signal a move into a world where women can be elegant with without sacrificing anything – where comfort and style are allowed to coexist.

Statement Outerwear

For those of us who experience proper seasons throughout the year, a good coat or jacket is a must-have for at least 6 months. After 2025, and now, looking ahead at 2026, it’s clear that we don’t just want a boring protective layer to throw on. We need something that can become the star of the show.

An elegant silhouette, with robust yet polished wool-blend fabrics, comes together to create a strong, sophisticated look that can go with almost anything, like athleisure or something more professional, on the other hand, oversized teddy jackets and even sports jackets are gaining traction – especially for the streetwear enjoyers out there. Just yesterday, I saw two girls wearing Ferrari jackets and looking stunning. If that’s your thing, go for it!

Conclusion

2026 is set to be a year that flips all of the fashion norms we’ve grown familiar with firmly on their heads. Brands are using nostalgia as a platform to innovate, as knitwear is mixed and matched with modern looks and materials to create something bold and new.  Streetwear is evolving: blurring the lines with formal fits by embracing subtlety and elevating material quality – from hoodies to skate trainers. One of the most exciting things about the trends for the year ahead is how inclusive and expressive they are. It’s less about putting yourself in a box and more about adapting each trend to fit your own taste.
